Chapter 11
Eleanor
THE DAY OF the premier came faster than El could have imagined. She had canceled all the appointment she had set up, though it pained her wallet to do so, but there was no way she was working on her big night.
Blanche was going with her fae prince or guard or whatever he was, so she couldn't come over to help her get ready. So El was stuck doing it all alone. It was times like these that made her miss her mother most.
Cancer. The c-word every loved one feared. It had come up on them quickly and swept her mother away in under a year.
The worst thing for a child was to watch their parent die right in front of their eyes. El’s mother was as beautiful on the inside as on the out. She was also unwaveringly kind. Nothing like her stepmother who only cared about herself.
Watching her mother slowly wither away before her had killed not just El but her father. El thought that it was probably the reason why he was so interested in Josephine. The likelihood of her dying on him was lower than low.
Twisting her hair around the curling iron, she sprayed it with hairspray and let it set. After a moment she unwinded her hair letting the final piece of spiral curled hair fall to her shoulder.
Doing her own hair had always been a difficult task for her. She constantly thought anything she could create would look a hundred times better on someone else. Don't think like that, she scolded herself. This is your night.
She set about pinning her curls up onto her head so that swept up into a pile on top of her head, the ends of them falling down to brush the nape of her neck in a waterfall effect. El added a few decorative jeweled pins in her hair so she really felt like a princess getting ready for the ball.
“That looks great,” Anna's voice stated from behind her.
El spun round to face her stepsister, self-conscious only standing there in her robe. “Uh, thanks. I like yours too.” While Anna's compliment might have been fake El’s wasn't.
Anna’s white blonde hair was pulled up into a tight high ponytail. Her smoky eyes and pale pink lips stick made her look more edgy than sporty. Her dress wrapped around her body like a glove, the dark red of the dress making her look like the Queen of the Damned incarnate. A look El could never pull off.
“Thanks, I know,” Anna smirked and flipped her hair over her shoulder.
“I see you received an invitation after all,” El commented curious as to how she had gotten hers.
The smile that curled onto Anna's face made El’s skin prickle. “Of course, was there any doubt?”
Not answering her, she held the neck of her robe closed awkwardly waiting to see what her sister wanted. Unless she was insulting her Anna spent most of her time pretending she didn't exist. So what did she want now?
“I
